Can we Actually Implement this Architecture?
My BIG book cover REVEAL (AI Powered Digital Twins, Wiley 2026)
From the Preface:
We never interpret AI-powered digital twins as fully formed systems operating without constraint. In practice, their implementation is incremental and shaped by engineering limits, organizational realities, and safety requirements. AI agents do not directly control heterogeneous or safety-critical systems, but operate through governed interfaces and adapters, particularly in operational technology environments where deterministic behavior and certification boundaries must be preserved.
Semantic layers—ontology, knowledge graphs, tagging, and governance frameworks—emerge gradually within high-value domains rather than through enterprise-wide standardization from the outset. Simulation is similarly tiered, with fast approximations supporting operational decisions and higher-fidelity models reserved for planning and validation, recognizing that not all actions can be simulated exhaustively in real time.
Autonomous recovery applies primarily to digital and configuration layers, while physical interventions remain subject to human approval and operational procedures. Although the architectural principles that we describe scale conceptually from enterprise to national or planetary twins, implementation constraints, latency boundaries, governance models, and ownership structures differ significantly across scales. AI-powered digital twins are therefore evolving systems built progressively as integration maturity, semantic coverage, and operational trust increase.
